Where to stay near Ancient Olympia
Sunny Apartment Amaliada is an affordable, comfortable base just 38 km (25–40 minutes by car) from Ancient Olympia — with a full kitchen, free parking and 24-hour self check-in.
A smarter base than the Olympia-village hotels
Olympia village is lovely but small and touristy: rooms cost more and it empties out at night. Amaliada is a real, lived-in town in Ilia, with a market, tavernas and cafés open all year — and rates from €50 a night. You stay in the centre, cook in your own full kitchen, and treat Olympia as an easy day trip.
💶 Cheaper
From €50/night, with free cancellation up to 30 days before.
🍳 Full kitchen
Self-cater and keep costs down — supermarket 100 m away.
🅿️ Free parking

38 km, 25–40 minutes
The drive from Amaliada to Ancient Olympia is simple: head south to Pyrgos (20 km), then east to Olympia, for a total of 25–40 minutes depending on traffic. Set off early to beat the Katakolo cruise-ship groups and the midday heat at the archaeological site.
A day at Ancient Olympia
The archaeological site
Walk among the ruins of the sacred grove of Ancient Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games from 776 BC.
Temple of Zeus & ancient stadium
See the fallen columns of the Temple of Zeus and run on the ancient stadium where the athletes once competed.
Two museums
The Archaeological Museum (Hermes of Praxiteles) and the Museum of the Olympic Games round out the visit.
Lunch & return
Eat at a village taverna or drive back to Amaliada for dinner in the market — just 1 minute from the apartment.

Beaches & Ancient Elis from the same base
The big advantage of Amaliada is that you are not stuck "just for Olympia". After your archaeology day, Blue Flag Kourouta beach is only 6 km away for an afternoon swim. And 12 km north lies Ancient Elis — the city that organised the Olympic Games — a quiet, authentic site most visitors skip.
